Intentional Weddings

(Also Recommitment Ceremonies, Divorce or Relationship Change Rituals, etc)

What we're doing
We call it 'Intentional Weddings'. It means a wedding where the promises made are made with a great deal of thought. Where every word is carefully chosen for what it brings to the meaning of the promises made. It's a process where we help people make wedding vows that help the relationship survive and grow.

Our history with this work
We have been doing the weddings since 1990, and the Mandala Enterprises(tm) mentoring since mid 1999.

The process
The process involves a series of meetings. Usually between 5 and 6. We've done it in as few as 4 twice, and it was very uncomfortable for everyone. It goes much smoother and easier on everyone involved if it can be split up into more meetings. After each meeting, there's homework, usually something that takes no more than an hour. The work itself involves us asking the couple a lengthy series of questions about what your intentions are, and how you want to place that into the wedding. There are also questions about the symbology of anything else you want in the wedding. And questions about how you're going to handle the troubles that all married people face. What commitments will you make that will enable you to get beyond these troubles? It's part creative process and part relationship mentoring. It's closely related to our Mandala Enterprises(tm) relationship coaching.

The cost
Our wedding work is very closely related to our coaching work. There will be 6 or more coaching/planning sessions, usually a final editing session (the parties to be married are not required to be present for that), and then the 'day of'. Sessions are billed at the same rate as the coaching work, and cover some of the same issues. This includes editing sessions. The 'day of' charge is usually $250. Additional expenses may apply for extra expenses incurred on our part for lodging or travel beyond 30 minutes’ drive from our home (these details will be worked out in our initial session).

After the wedding
After the wedding, we'll make ourselves available as coaches, if you need us. Either right after or whenever you need us.

Ownership of the text
After the wedding, copyright is owned jointly by you and us. After all, your agreements are what made up the work, we provided the glue. We retain rights to distribution for promotional purposes, and we reserve the rights to quote from your wedding in our other work. You retain all other rights. If someone who sees your wedding wants to reproduce it, they must get permission from you and from us.

Legal Matters

Should you wish to formalize your wedding with the State, we are legally empowered to do so.  Both Akien* and Dawn were Ordained as Ministers through the Universal Life Church on Sept. 12, 1989.  Les Addison holds an M. Div. from the Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley.

*(NOTE: As of this writing, 10/27/05, Akien is still listed under his previous name; he’s contacted them about the name change, but not yet heard back. Let us know if you wish to verify his credentials, and we’ll let you know what his name was at the time. ;^)
